Verdant Flow

Background

Built in 1917, this Colonial Revival carried the elegance of its era—symmetry, shutters, arched openings, and a beloved bay window. But the kitchen sat in a cramped corner, more suited to another century than to the rhythms of modern family life. As plans took shape, the homeowners’ excitement grew; their love of cooking was the inspiration for this kitchen, a reward for years of hard work.

Challenge

An interior load-bearing wall and a maze of redundant rooms disrupted circulation and cut the kitchen off from the rest of the home. To invite in light, flow and functionality, we needed to reconfigure the first floor—transforming the kitchen into the true heart of the home without compromising its historic character.

Solutions

What was once a series of stops and starts became a fluid, social floor plan through the absorption of the butler’s pantry and a portion of the dining room. — photo 1
By removing a load-bearing wall, we extended sightlines and connected the kitchen to adjoining spaces. — photo 2
This custom walnut range hood crowns the professional-grade range, its curved silhouette a striking contract to opalescent zellige tile. It was a doozy to install! — photo 3
Dual-tone cabinetry—Drift of Mist uppers with verdant green lowers—anchors the room, while a handmade zellige backsplash catches the light with subtle texture that softens the kitchen’s symmetry. — photo 4
A dedicated appliance cabinet pairs small-appliance storage with a beverage fridge, both trimmed in custom millwork and dark glass for symmetry and discretion. — photo 5
Opening the wall connected kitchen and dining, giving both rooms more light and presence. — photo 6
