Playful Patchwork

Background

Two doors, one bathroom, no room for shortcuts. This Jack-and-Jill bath balances daily life with historic responsibility. The goal wasn’t novelty, but function with character. Pattern, color, and material work the way old houses do best: layered, considered, and confident.

Challenge

All white, all right, we suppose. The existing bathroom functioned, but it felt stripped bare—short on character, detail, and personality. The challenge was to bring historic elements back into the room—pattern, color, and material—while keeping it durable and practical for two young users.

Tile raised the stakes. Multiple shapes, colors, and orientations required careful planning and precision, especially given uneven framing throughout the space. Around the bathtub window, the layout itself posed a problem: the room lacked symmetry, and achieving it would require structural change.
